A Crooked Wall Street Billionaire Is Crafting Trumponomics

WASHINGTON ― In late August, the private equity firm chaired by billionaire Wilbur Ross agreed to pay a $ 2.3 million fine and return $ 11.8 million that regulators said it had bilked from its own clients ― which included pension funds and universities. On Wednesday, Ross co-authored an economic analysis for Donald Trump.

The Securities and Exchange Commission had alleged that WL Ross & Co. failed “to disclose its fee allocation practices” for more than a decade in some private equity funds it managed. In human-speak, the SEC was accusing the firm of fudging its numbers to steal from its investors. This week, Ross was attempting to rebut calculations from a conservative think tank that Trump’s economic plan doesn’t add up. To do so, he relied on magic numbers and fantastical thinking.

Analyzing Trump’s tax policies, The Tax Foundation concluded that they would cost $ 2.6 trillion over the next decade. This was a low estimate ― when the group ran the numbers without relying on assumptions about tax cuts for the wealthy stimulating economic growth, the hit to the national debt would have been as high as $ 5.9 trillion.

Ross, writing with University of California-Irvine business professor Peter Navarro, declared the Tax Foundation analysis incomplete. Their number-crunchers hadn’t accounted for the offsetting effects of Trump’s deregulation agenda, his energy plan or his trade platform. Put together, these three would generate $ 2.37 trillion, giving Trump room to close the gap with more than $ 200 billion in unspecified spending cuts.

This new revenue, Ross and Navarro argued, could be divided into $ 487 billion in benefits from (again, unspecified) deregulation efforts, $ 147 billion from promoting fossil fuels and $ 1.74 trillion from his trade reforms.

Leave aside whether the health and environmental costs of gutting the EPA and boosting coal will actually generate a net benefit for the Treasury. It’s pretty easy to hear politicians in Washington bemoan the economic costs of regulations while ignoring the economic benefits ― particularly among Republicans ― and trade is doing the lion’s share of the budgetary work, anyway.

How will Trump get $ 1.74 trillion from trade reforms? By eliminating the trade deficit. How will he do this? By renegotiating American trade deals and threatening to leave the World Trade Organization, the international body that adjudicates many international trade disputes.

It’s true that the United States doesn’t exercise all of its leverage over the WTO system. And it’s true that the North American Free Trade Agreement, normalized trade relations with China and a host of other NAFTA-style trade pacts have cost the U.S. millions of good-paying manufacturing jobs. What is not clear is how Donald Trump would single-handedly reshape the entire global financial order through sheer force of will.

Even Ross and Navarro acknowledge that the U.S. ability to shape WTO policy is limited by the group’s “one country, one vote” structure. It’s not obvious exactly what the U.S. can extract by threatening to leave (and by extension, threatening to crash global financial markets). Beyond WTO, the United States has trade agreements in force with 20 nations. If the Trans-Pacific Partnership goes through by the end of this year, that number will increase to 31. Which would be more important ― Mexico or Japan? Or will we tackle them at the same time? Would the U.S. have more leverage with these major geopolitical allies if it leaned on smaller, less-powerful allies first? Nice country you got there, Panama. Be a shame if something happened to it.

The point here is not that the U.S. can’t improve conditions for its own workers (or in many cases, those of its trading partners) by rethinking and renegotiating its trade policy. It’s that doing so will be very complicated, and involve a host of dependent national security issues. Our trade pacts don’t look the way they do solely because U.S. negotiators are corrupt or stupid. In some cases, the government decides that giving away part of the American economic pie is a useful way to create or maintain political alliances.

This is not the sort of thing that can be glibly quantified with a promise to “renegotiate.” It’s much, much harder to reshape the global economic order than it is to get a bill through Congress.

But who knows. If the company Ross chairs can trick its investors for 10 years, maybe the candidate he advises can pull one over on the world.

WL Ross was not immediately available for comment.

My Best-Kept Secret To Having It All

Have you ever reached the glorious moment of achieving a goal only to realize that you feel empty inside instead of fulfilled and satisfied?

Have you ever avoided the completion of a goal because you are scared of success?

It’s so easy to be committed to working towards a goal all the time and not necessarily to reaching it. Why would anyone be addicted to hard work but not be committed to actually achieving the end goal? It seems silly when it is put so simply, but the reason is also simple. When one goal is complete, a scary void opens as the unavoidable question arises, “Now what?”

Do you spend what feels like maximum time and effort striving for things that make you feel worthy only to get there and realize that your self worth still isn’t complete? Consequentially, you turn to the next goal for validation, and it becomes a vicious cycle that robs you of the joy of a job well done. This happens because we tend to derive our self worth from the process of feeling like we’re doing something. The pressure we put on ourselves to be working towards something constantly is way bigger than our desire for money and freedom; it is about proving our own self worth.

And when you attach your entire self worth to your life’s work, you end up on a never-ending search for validation.

Why? Because your life’s work will never be complete until–you guessed it–your life is over! Thus, it’s impossible to achieve our own validation this way before death, and who would be crazy enough or willing to wait for that?

If your remedy for treating the emptiness inside is to throw yourself 110% into a fury of hard work, you are treating the symptoms instead of the root of the problem. It’s like putting a Band-Aid on a malignant tumor. Whether or not you choose to pay attention to the cancer, it will spread, harm you, and affect the way you live and operate in daily life. And, when you are forced inevitably to face the issue at some point in the future, you will deal with the consequences of having let the disease fester and grow into a much bigger and more complicated problem.

“Okay,” you may be saying right now, “but how the heck do I adjust this pattern to start getting validation and satisfaction now, before I achieve my next goal?”

Well, this is such a COMMON struggle, but I think we have all seen examples of those people who “have it all figured out.” Yes, many people who look happy on the outside are in complete turmoil on the inside, but I’m talking about those people who really have it together. Men and women who radiate peace, happiness, joy, love, good will to others, service, success, completion–in short, everything that represents living a centered and worthy life.

It all stems back to the secret of self-love.

These people carry a sense of validation and self-affirmation that is not transient; what happens today, tomorrow, next week, next month, 10 years from now, etc. does not change who they are or what they are worth; a person who has self-love already believes and trusts him or herself completely and does not strive towards the achievement of goals to prove anything.

Imagine the difference it would make in your life if you already sincerely valued and trusted yourself instead of feeling the need to prove yourself.

Imagine how powerful your maximum time and effort would become if you already felt validated and affirmed. What would be the impact on your life and business with a breakthrough in self-love?

When I learned how to completely fall in love with myself, every aspect of my life changed for the better–my confidence, my relationships, my work, and my spiritual, mental, and physical health. For years now, no matter what ups or downs I am experiencing, I have woken up every day with a smile on my face and a genuine enthusiasm for life. Everyone wants to feel this way, and I have made it my life’s work to spread the key to love and happiness.

To avoid complete repetition of myself, read my article 6 Practices to Attract Love into Your Life if you are interested in learning crucial steps that I took on my journey to self-love: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/catherine-a-wood/6-practices-to-attract-lo_b_11836564.html

Each one of our goals adds up to paint the bigger picture of the dreams, growth, and purpose that we want to see when we look back at the end of our lives. Just don’t settle and wait until the end to get completion.

The Secret To True Happiness And Making A Unique Impact On The World

2016-09-26-1474901218-8971071-BeYou3.jpg

What if I told you that there is one main secret to true happiness?

And that this secret also guarantees that you will make a truly unique impact on the world?

And live a fulfilling life without regret?

It turns out that this secret does exist.

It is actually incredibly simple.

And it is something that you have and nobody else does.

The secret is being yourself and totally owning it.

Or as Neil Pasricha, #1 bestselling author of The Happiness Equation, says, “Be you and be cool with it.”

As he describes, “There is nothing more satisfying than being loved for who you are and nothing more painful than being loved for who you’re not but pretending to be.”

How true.

This point is validated by the number one regret of the dying, which is “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”

Of course a key word in that line is “courage.” While being yourself is a simple concept, it is challenging to implement.

But it is worth striving for. Every day.

And only you know exactly what that means for you.

As Pasricha says, “Settling in to your true, weird, authentic self isn’t easy, but it’s the most satisfying way to have everything.”

If you are already living a life true to yourself, continue down that path. It is the right one.

On the other hand, if you sense that you could lean in to being you even more, do it.

Whatever you love to do, resolve to do more of it.

Don’t have the same regrets when you look back on your life.

Be you and be cool with it.

It is the secret to happiness, fulfillment, and making a truly unique impact on the world.

As Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”

Charlotte Police Release Partial Video Of Keith Scott Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Saturday released portions of video footage of the police shooting of Keith Scott.

Scott was killed by police Tuesday in an incident described very differently by police and witnesses. A graphic video released on Saturday, taken from police body camera footage of the incident, shows an officer trying to gain access to Scott’s vehicle. It captures the moments after Scott goes down, but the shooting itself is obscured.

A second video shot from a police dashboard camera shows an officer firing at Scott after he exits his vehicle. The graphic and disturbing footage shows the moment Scott falls to the ground.

It’s not clear from that video whether Scott was carrying a gun, but police released photos of a gun they say they recovered at the scene.

Police also released a more detailed explanation of the incident, claiming that Scott was wearing an ankle holster and had a marijuana blunt, of which they provided a picture.

In a press conference held prior to the videos’ release, Putney doubled down on earlier accusations that Scott was armed and noted that there were other factors, including possession of marijuana, that led to a “compelling reason to start the encounter.”

He did note, however, that there’s no clear evidence that Scott pointed a gun at an officer.

He absolutely was in possession of a handgun,” Putney said. “There was no definitive visual evidence that he had a gun in his hand and that he pointed it at an officer. That I did not visually see in the video … When [my officers] see a weapon and they see the marijuana they say ‘uh oh, this is a threat to the public.’”

In a release accompanying the video footage, police also said they saw Scott holding a gun before the confrontation.

Putney said that officers are “absolutely not being charged” from his end, but that independent investigations are ongoing.

He also said that not all of the footage in police possession would be released Saturday, but that more would be released in the future.

After Scott’s wife, Rakeyia, released her own cellphone recording of the shooting on Friday, pressure grew for the city to release footage from cameras mounted in police cars and worn by officers.

In Rakeyia’s video, she can be heard telling officers that her husband has a brain injury and that he isn’t carrying a weapon.

Protesters marched through Charlotte Saturday, chanting “no tapes, no peace” and “take our lives we’ll keep our money.” Just as activist groups gathered at Marshall Park for the procession, word came down through the grapevine that Charlotte City Council was bending to pressure releasing the tapes alongside the state Bureau of Investigation.

The federal Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the shooting, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Local and national politicians, including Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, had joined the chorus of Americans demanding the recordings by Friday night.

”It’s a shame that it took so much public pressure, locally and nationally to release the tapes to the public. How can we trust a policing system and a government that needs so much pressure from the community to do the right thing?” Marcus Bass, a local activist who marched with Charlotte Uprising on Saturday, told The Huffington Post. “The community will continue to investigate on its own and justice may be found at the courthouse and the ballot box.”

Local and state authorities who have access to the recordings didn’t immediately return calls for comment. On Friday, Charlotte police told HuffPost that there was no timeline on the release of the videos, saying that the State Bureau of Investigation had jurisdiction over them.

Meanwhile, a second witness video of the incident made the rounds on Saturday, appearing to show officers cuffing Scott after they shot him.

The scene is obscured by foliage and the officers, but Scotts legs can be seen on the ground as officers ask one another if they’re OK.

Nick Baumann contributed reporting.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely

Why This Activist Hacker Is Launching A Hunger Strike In Jail

Martin Gottesfeld, an activist jailed on charges stemming from a politically motivated cyberattack on Boston Children’s Hospital, said he’ll begin a hunger strike on Oct. 3 to bring attention to what he says is widespread mistreatment of children.

In a message published exclusively on HuffPost last week, Gottesfeld said he took out the hospital’s internet in the spring of 2014 to protest the controversial treatment of teenager Justina Pelletier. Gottesfeld is among those who criticize the hospital for separating Pelletier from her parents after they sought medical treatment for her. The hospital and state of Massachusetts claimed the parents had abused her with unnecessary and harmful medical treatments. (Check here for more information on Pelletier’s controversial case, and here for a primer on Gottesfeld’s involvement as part of the hacker collective Anonymous.)

Gottesfeld, jailed since his arrest in February, says in a new statement that he has decided to go on hunger strike to renew attention on Pelletier and other children he says have undergone similar ordeals.

He says he’ll continue his strike unless two conditions are met. All of the presidential candidates must promise to work toward ensuring American children are spared the kind of mistreatment he says has victimized Pelletier. And the office of Carmen Ortiz, the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, which is prosecuting Gottesfeld, must end its “political,” over-aggressive style of prosecution. (HuffPost catalogued Ortiz’s controversial record in a July report that caused a political dust-up in Massachusetts.)

Ortiz’s office declined to comment on Gottesfeld’s hunger strike or his demands.

Here is Gottesfeld’s full statement on his hunger strike:

American children, marched to death, starved, put into stress positions and solitary confinement.  Forced to eat their own vomit and trade sexual favors for food. Made to endure simulated executions and being denied life-saving medical care.

Before I was an advocate for Justina Pelletier, when I first encountered these and so many additional horror stories told by other survivors of institutionalized child abuse, they sounded too horrible to be true in modern America. I was stunned to find it all documented by Congressional hearings, Government Accountability reports, and a PBS documentary aptly entitled, Who’s Watching the Kids?

How could this be happening, and how could it all be happening so quietly?  Retired Congressman George Miller referred to these human rights violations as “an open secret” and worked tirelessly for decades to end this torture of America’s youth. He held hearings, sponsored legislation year after year, and implored the Justice Department to investigate. Though eye opening, the hearings remain obscure. The legislation never passed and the Justice Department declined Miller’s urgent request for action to protect these kids and hold the guilty accountable for past abuses.

Unfortunately in these cases, even when children died, law enforcement agencies rarely take meaningful action. For example, across the eight preventable deaths of institutionalized children examined in one of the GAO’s reports, there were only two criminal prosecutions, leading to a total of one month of jail time.

Despite clear moral duty, as well as our nation’s obligation under the Convention Against Torture, sadly such insufficient action is par for this very disheartening course. Knowing that there is no one else to protect these kids from this life altering, and too often life ending abuse, some advocates are compelled to act in the defense of these innocent children. In so doing, they can find themselves targeted by the same law enforcement agencies they had previously begged to safeguard the youth.

In a gross perversion of American jurisprudence, as well as an abject disregard for our nation’s human rights obligations, the abusers are protected instead of the abused, and torture continues with impunity in the United States. This results in activists being scared out of the community, and potential advocates being chased away before they can author their first petition, organize their first protest, or even send their first tweet.

I’ve seen survivors of institutional abuse silenced by threats of both civil and criminal prosecution, and the damage to reputation those entail. This must stop if there is ever to be justice for the kids.

So I ask my fellow citizens to join my wife and I in demanding a pledge from every presidential candidate to both work with legislators and to direct executive law enforcement action to protect our nation’s most vulnerable and frequently marginalized youth, so that no future child ever has to endure the torture that Justina Pelletier and countless thousands of others have, in most cases, suffered in silence.

I humbly beg journalists from around the world to look into these matters and shine the bright spotlight which is desperately needed, and which they are uniquely suited to provide. My wife and I welcome opportunities to work with the media to raise awareness, and can be reached at FreeMartyG@gmail.com.

We encourage any members of the media who have previously inquired elsewhere, to contact us there now. We welcome the opportunity to speak with you.

Finally, having exhausted all other avenues to protect and raise awareness for these kids and their advocates, I’m announcing that absent the required pledges from our candidates, as well as an immediate change of course away from the political prosecution the Boston U.S. Attorney’s Office has sadly become well known for, I will begin a hunger strike the night of Monday, October 3.

For news, updates, to speak out, or hear those who do, please follow @FreeMartyG and/or like the Facebook page. We’re also seeking volunteers. There is a lot to do.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Why Justice Kennedy Stonewalled A Reporter Who Asked About Citizens United

An investigative reporter tried to catch Justice Anthony Kennedy by surprise with a question about a controversial Supreme Court decision the justice wrote.

It didn’t go particularly well.

The Intercept’s Lee Fang wrote about his encounter with the 80-year-old justice last week. His mission was to get Kennedy to open up about Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the 2010 ruling that ushered in a new era of money in politics.

Kennedy wasn’t having any of it. Not at a friendly Sacramento courthouse reception to celebrate a slice of California’s judicial history.

“Well, I don’t comment. That’s for the bar and the lower bench to figure out,” he said, in a nod to all those lawyers and judges who have to interpret Supreme Court decisions.

Pressed as to whether the court should revisit the Citizens United ruling, Kennedy didn’t budge. “I don’t comment on my cases,” he said.

In his article, Fang notes that, in fact, Kennedy does comment on his decisions ― even on the impact of politically potent rulings like Citizens United. Last year, The Huffington Post’s Paul Blumenthal looked at how the justice, during a talk at Harvard Law School, cast doubt on his own reasoning in that case for allowing unlimited electoral spending by corporations and unions.

So why was Kennedy’s reluctant to be equally candid with Fang?

The justice may simply have been thrown off by an unexpected question from a reporter at an apparently “safe” event ― held in a judicial library named after him, no less.

But there’s also the bigger picture of how the Supreme Court interacts with the press. The justices rarely just talk to reporters

The justices tend not to do interviews, period,” Supreme Court public information officer Kathy Arberg once told the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, adding that they make “very rare exceptions” when they’re promoting books. She declined to comment for this story.

The justices tend not to do interviews, period.
Kathy Arberg, Supreme Court public information officer

That’s not to say the justices don’t like to discuss their thoughts in public or in front of the press. SCOTUS Map, a website that tracks their travels ― yes, it’s a thing ― lists dozens of appearances across the country and abroad since the court’s summer recess began in July.

The vast majority of such planned events take place in academic or judicial settings, where the justices likely feel more at ease. The format may be more formal and less conducive to surprises ― and they may have a say as to press access, recordings and who, if anyone, is asking questions.

Even then, things don’t always go smoothly.

The late Justice Antonin Scalia made headlines in 2004 when a federal marshal seized recordings made by two Mississippi journalists who had inadvertently violated the justice’s “no recording device” policy. Scalia did apologize to the reporters and amend his policy to accommodate print but not broadcast media.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, on the other hand, routinely allow cameras to record their public remarks ― suggesting, at least among some of the court’s members, a shift to more openness and access in the YouTube era.

Organizations like Fix the Court are constantly pushing to make the Supreme Court and the justices more accessible and transparent. (Just on Thursday, The National Law Journal published a report on how none of the court’s members reveal basic health information.)

After his brush-up with Kennedy, Fang was quickly escorted out of the reception by security and asked for his interview notes, which he declined to share. He did not make it back in.

Which goes to show that if you want to get a Supreme Court justice to talk, you have to do it on his or her own terms. Or as Kennedy himself once put it to a congressional committee, “We’re judged ultimately by what we write.”

Money, Millennials, And Finding Happiness: My Talk With The Iconic Deepak Chopra

2016-09-21-1474495479-2144486-TonyTriumphandDeepakChopra.JPG
Deepak Chopra and Tony Triumph at the Harper’s Bazaar x Brunello Cucinelli event in Soho, NY.

Neatly tucked into an oasis of calm beyond the usual madness of New York Fashion Week, speaking 1-on-1 with Deepak Chopra was the cornerstone of common sense, sensibility, and gratitude needed for my brain to recondition.

As I joined Harper’s Bazaar and Brunello Cucinelli’s Soho Flagship for an intimate cocktail event and panel conversation, I was welcomed by clean beachy hues and a lush, luminous atmosphere. Arriving a little late, I Instantly felt safe and alleviated from the pressures of my day, and of course, my journey through rush hour traffic getting downtown. There was a hidden somber to the room. “The Deepak effect,” I thought.

Exclusive to friends of Deepak Chopra and Brunello Cucinelli VIPs, the room comfortably held about 60 of us. As the epochal Deepak Chopra perched a white seated lounge, along with Brunello Cucinelli President, Massimo Caronna, Bazaar executive Fashion & Beauty Director, Avril Graham kicked off the conversation with highlights to Deepak’s latest book, Radical Beauty.

2016-09-21-1474497119-5209740-DeepakChopraHarpersBazaarBrunelloCucinelli001.jpg

Shifting into the atmosphere, my brain suddenly did a shuffle, organizing my thoughts and examining my experiences from this New York Fashion Week in order of importance. “You can evoke it right now. Just turn your attention to who’s doing the listening.” I heard Deepak say. Which I took as an ethereal response to my digression of the moment, but mostly to Graham’s first question, “What is Beauty?”

“If you feel a presence, it’s your being. Not your mind saying you should’ve gone to the bathroom before this presentation started.” Deepak continued, finessing a bit of laughter to the room.

“If you take this presence wherever you go you will radiate beauty. It is a presence- it’s not a thought, it’s not a feeling, it’s not an emotion, it’s not your physical body. Take your presence wherever you go and you will radiate beauty and light from the sun.”

2016-09-22-1474511973-87506-SS2_6524001.jpg

As each guest sat and soaked in Deepak’s ideologies, the room whirled silent more times than I could count, each of us pondering in those famous ‘Ah-ha’ moments that we always hear Oprah speak about. Occasionally chiming in, Massimo Caronna offered us his wisdom and insight on the overall structure of the Brunello Cucinelli brand. Seemingly, no employee is allowed to be communicated with after the closing hours of 5:30pm, and as Brunello Cucinelli is the first person in, he is also the first person to leave at closing hours.

This conversation would remain intimate, open and candid, with Graham making reference to the annual Bazaar Icons party hosted on the previous Friday, Kanye West’s performance, and Deepak’s response that he’d in fact once taught meditation to Mr. West himself.

Brunello Cucinelli President Massimo Carrona, BAZAAR Executive Fashion & Beauty Editor Avril Graham, and Deepak Chopra joined forces for an intimate panel conversation at the Brunello Cucinelli flagship in SoHo, NY.

Yet before any panel discussions, and before Avril Graham took the mic and introduced Deepak to the intimate room of celebrities, VIPS, special invited guests, and thousands streaming live via social media, I was fortunate enough to get in my own set of questions with Deepak 1-on-1.

Chiming in on the topics of Money, Millennials, and Finding Happiness, tune-in below for my exclusive chat with the iconic Deepak Chopra:

Tony Triumph: As many of us desire health and wellness within Arts & Entertainment, what do you recommend for us to maintain our bliss, beauty, and balance?

Deepak Chopra: If you really feel centered all the time, if your body feels energetic and joyful, if your heart feels loving and compassionate, if your mind is restful, alert and quiet, and you are carefree, you can achieve anything. It doesn’t matter what.

Tony Triumph: How do you feel about millennials and the impact they have on society ?

Deepak Chopra: Overall I feel very encouraged by the millennials, because they have a lot of idealism, they have passion and they are wanting to change the world.

2016-09-22-1474519952-6868881-TonyTriumphinterviewingDeepakChopra.JPG

Tony Triumph: What are 5 key things that we can do to change our lives now?

Deepak Chopra: Get good sleep every night, manage your stress, cultivate healthy emotions- like love, compassion, joy, and peace of mind, move- if possible, do a little yoga and meditation, read, and eat food that nourishes your body and soul.

Tony Triumph: What is your business advice to millennials who are overwhelmed by their goals in this fast-changing world?

Deepak: I do believe in smart goals, so you should always stretch more than you think you can achieve. You should make sure everything is measurable, you should have a good team behind you that supports you, you should record your process, and you should set time limits.

An expert in the field of mind-body healing, Deepak Chopra, MD, FACP is a world-renowned speaker and author on the subject of alternative medicine. He is the author of more than 80 books translated in over 43 languages, including 22 New York Times bestsellers.

6 Expert-Approved Tips For Dating With Anxiety

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, getting through a date can seem near impossible.

It may help to know you’re not alone. An estimated 18 percent of all American adults suffer from an anxiety disorder of some kind, ranging from social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and general anxiety. There’s a good chance you’ve gone on a date with someone who’s had a panic attack over the thought of dinner and a movie.

There are ways to cope with anxiety, though, and meet someone worthwhile. Below, experts on anxiety share their best advice for managing your worries and stress so you can successfully get through a date.

One technique that is well-known in anxiety treatment is the idea of exposure: The more you deal with things that stress you out, the better equipped you are to handle them. If dating feels particularly nerve-racking, start slow by putting yourself in situations where you can practice small talk, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University.

“Go to any social event ― a dance, a church picnic or a hangout after work ― and set a goal of talking to a stranger who seems interesting for at least 10 minutes, without the pressure to ask anyone out,” he told The Huffington Post. “Taking the scary thing ― a real date ― off the table will give you security to practice your dating and conversational skills until you get more comfortable.”

Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself in anticipation of the date, said Jennifer Rollin, a psychotherapist in North Potomac, Maryland. Just because you think you’ll spend the whole night stuttering out of nervousness and mispronouncing menu items doesn’t mean that’s necessarily going to happen.

“When you view your thoughts as ‘just stories,’ you can distance yourself from the ones that are unhelpful,” she said. “Let’s say that you are thinking ‘I’m going to come across as insecure’ or ‘If people knew about my anxiety, no one would want to date me.’ Rather then judging yourself for having these thoughts, simply notice them and then determine whether that train of thought is helpful or unhelpful.”

When a thought is unproductive, filter it out and try to replace it with something more optimistic, Rollin recommended.

“For example, you might tell yourself, ‘No matter how this date goes, I am proud of myself for facing my anxiety and putting myself out there.’”

Try to see a healthy dose of stress as your friend when you’re dating, said Kimber Shelton, a psychologist based in Duncanville, Texas. A bit of nervous energy can give you the focus and motivation to get through the date. The key is to keep the date short so you don’t feel trapped.

“When stress is first activated we think, ‘I feel nervous, but I can do this!’ ― but that thought can be be temporary and short-lived,” she explained.

To that end, Shelton recommends scheduling dates of a reasonable length and meeting up in a familiar place ― your favorite coffee shop, for instance, or a nearby restaurant where you’re well versed in the menu.

“You want to just slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone,” she said.

Everyone dreads awkward silence on dates but when you have anxiety, you may feel a heightened need to “be on” around new people. You often feel tongue-tied, making even even basic conversation difficult.

To combat this kind of performance anxiety, Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael recommends storing up a few conversation starters beforehand.

“Read some news stories before your date and choose a handful of topics that might come in handy ― something about the arts, the weather, sports, local news and world events,” she said. “Besides filling up the awkward silences, this will connect you to your date because current events are relevant to pretty much everyone.”

In anticipation of a date, it’s easy to get caught up in how the other person might perceive you. But instead of worrying about where you stand, psychologist Stacey Rosenfeld suggests flipping the script: How will they stack up in your estimation?

“Shift your focus to whether or not this is a suitable person for you to date, said Rosenfeld, who’s based in Coral Gables, Florida. “Focus on what you have in common, their chemistry with you and whether or not you’d like to see this person again.”

She added: “This can take a lot of the pressure off the meeting because you realize you have an active role in this process, rather than passively waiting to be accepted or not. This strategy works great for job interviews, too!”

When the date is over, put it to bed. You may feel tempted to mentally replay the awkward moments or lulls in conversations but resist that urge, said Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and author of Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious.

“Rather than beat yourself up or focus on awkward moments, go through the date recalling fun moments and good conversation,” she said. “Did you both find yourself laughing or did your date compliment you, or vice versa?

If the date truly lacked any moments of connection, remind yourself it wasn’t your fault, Kolakowski said: “Sometimes people just don’t click, and that’s OK.”

Trump Faces Allegations Over Charity That Forced Other Politicians To Resign

WASHINGTON ― Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold on Tuesday published yet another blockbuster piece on Donald Trump’s charitable foundation, detailing how the Republican presidential nominee used $ 258,000 from his charity to settle lawsuits concerning his other businesses.

In one case, Trump used charity money to settle a dispute over the size of his flagpole in front of his Florida Mar-A-Lago estate. He later used $ 5,000 from his charity to spend on advertising for his hotels and another $ 10,000 to have his likeness rendered in a large painting (the second such time his foundation has paid for a self-portrait).

If Trump were a normal candidate, these allegations would be devastating. But he’s clearly not a normal candidate given he’s already gotten away with birtherism, racism and mocking Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for not being a real hero because he was a prisoner of war

Normal candidates have resigned from office and pleaded guilty to charges stemming from similar games with charities that Trump has played. Some have gone to prison. If recent campaign history holds, Trump will move on from this to his next momentary scandal.

Just ask former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. In February 2010, she was forced to resign as part of a plea deal with prosecutors over her misuse of funds that included her stealing gift cards that were supposed to go to poor children. Prosecutors alleged in their indictment that she used at least $ 2,000 in Target and Best Buy gift cards. There were other misdeeds, but the gift cards stood out.

Or ask Billy Eugene Wilson, who was indicted in November 2013 when he was mayor of Greenbrier, Tennessee, after he was alleged to have swiped $ 60,000 from a local Toys for Tots charity he founded. Wilson was not an unusual case. Two years later, state Rep. Tyrone Brooks, a Democrat from Atlanta, resigned his seat in the Georgia legislature and pleaded guilty to tax fraud after it was discovered that he used charity funds for personal use.

This past summer, U.S. Rep Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) and her chief of staff were indicted for allegedly using an education charity as “a personal slush fund.” Prosecutors alleged that Brown and Co. raised $ 800,000 that was supposed to go toward scholarships but instead was used to pay for plane tickets, personal car repairs and lavish trips. The charity allegedly only gave out two scholarships totaling $ 1,200.

The indictment said more than $ 200,000 from the charity was used to pay for Brown to host a golf tournament at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, to pay for lavish receptions, a luxury box at a Beyonce concert and a box when the Jacksonville Jaguars played the Washington Redskins,” according to a local news report.

After 12 terms in office, Brown went down in defeat in the Democratic primary soon after the indictment was issued.

Politicians have also gotten in scandals involving their family’s own charity. Two months before the Tennessee mayor’s indictment, New Jersey Assemblyman Albert Coutinho (D-Essex) stepped down from office, after he conceded he stole roughly $ 32,500 from his family’s charity and lied about it on financial disclosure forms. He was later charged with the theft and sentenced to three years probation. As part of his plea deal, he agreed to never again seek public office in the state.

Like Coutinho’s charity, the Trump Foundation is a family operation. It was started by the real estate mogul in the late ‘80s with largely his own funds. As Farenthold reported, Trump later stopped giving his own money to the charity and instead relied on donations from others. It has been difficult to figure out just what work the foundation has actually done that could be described as charitable. Trump has used the foundation’s money to spend on items that can best be described as vanity projects or personal needs. In another recent piece, Fahrenthold reported that Trump paid $ 12,000 for a Tim Tebow-signed football helmet.

Why We Care So Much About Brad And Angelina’s Divorce

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are divorcing. Seems strange how much energy and personal time we invest in complete strangers. And then when something like this happens it startles us and makes us feel sad. Sad for the end of an era when our idealization of what a life could be is writ large in the relationship of someone else. It’s also a cold, unwelcome reminder that life and dreams and other people are never quite what they seem to be. Even if they’ve been the stars of your fantasies for half a lifetime.

But what else is there to do once you’ve built a glass house for someone else’s marriage or life, except knock it down. It’s so human of us. To peer over the fence at another’s way of life out of voyeuristic curiosity, only to shake our heads and tisk our tongues in disapproval. It’s also so human of us to forget or choose to ignore this infallible truth – that all humans are human.

It’s a truth that is the impenetrable foundation for a more forgiving and compassionate life and world-view. But it’s so much more interesting to hold out hope for the secret gods among us. It tickles our sense of separateness between “us and them.” And confirms our belief that other’s lives are more fulfilling and interesting. We also proclaim with vicarious arrogance that we would do it differently and here’s how.

I’ve only just started to outgrow the inclination for celebrity worship that consumed my teens and twenties. But even still, it’s only graduated to a different, more sophisticated version of the same – this time it’s dead writers instead of reality stars and historic leaders instead of pop singers.

Maybe we’re genetically predisposed to admiration turned idol-worship. It’s been so human for so long, even Moses can attest. I guess what I’m getting at is at the core maybe a deeper (or deeply rooted) fallacy that “what is out there is greener than what’s in here.” It’s got to be! we cry. But maybe if we’d start to look at life with the truth that all humans are indeed human, there would be less hero worship and more appreciation for the preciousness in each of us. Maybe more would be done to help the less fortunate. Maybe more of ourselves we’d make.

Assisted Suicide Isn’t Viewed the Same in Every Country

In Belgium, someone legally ending their own life is an everyday occurrence.

In fact, it usually happens more than once a day.

That’s because the northern European nation has the most liberal euthanasia laws in the world.

Since 2002, competent adults and emancipated minors there have been able to end their lives simply by asking a doctor to inject them with a lethal drug.

The request must be in writing and it must meet two criteria. The person needs to be in “constant and unbearable” pain and the condition must be “incurable.” The pain can be physical or emotional.

In 2014, Belgium extended the practice. It approved a law that allows terminally ill children of any age to receive a lethal injection if their parents agree with the child’s wishes.

People appear to be taking advantage of the laws.

More than 1,800 people in Belgium died by legal lethal injection in 2013. That’s an average of about five a day.

So, it wasn’t a big surprise in Belgium when reports came out earlier this month that a wheelchair-bound athlete might end her life after the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil.

However, the report created quite a stir in the United States and elsewhere. So much so that 37-year-old Marieke Vervoort held a news conference a few days later to announce she wasn’t planning on ending her life.

Not yet anyway.

Countries’ opinions differ

Brazil is among a host of nations across the world that don’t allow assisted suicide.

In the U.S., only four states allow people in certain circumstances to end their own lives.

Those states are Washington, Oregon, Vermont, and California, whose law took effect in June.

Montana does not have “death with dignity” statute, but a state Supreme Court decision in 2009 cleared the way for physician-assisted dying.

Peg Sandeen, the executive director of Death With Dignity, told Healthline that European countries and the U.S. don’t see end-of-life decisions the same way.

She said Europeans have a more pragmatic view of death while views in the U.S. tend to be more emotional.

“We have an extremely youth-focused culture,” said Sandeen. “Americans’ attitude toward dying is to think we never have to do it.”

Stan Goldberg, a cancer survivor and professor emeritus at San Francisco State University, agrees.

Goldberg, who was a Hospice volunteer for 13 years, told Healthline that Americans’ views on assisted suicide tend to get caught up in spiritual arguments.

He noted that in Taiwan and other Asian countries the opposition to assisted dying laws is more rooted in duty. Their societies believe that children are obligated to take care of their parents.

That includes extending their lives when they are old.

“Right to die laws are an expression of a country’s values,” said Goldberg.

The case for assisted dying

For Goldberg and Sandeen, the reason to support death with dignity laws is pretty simple.
They believe it’s a decision people should be allowed to make.

“Everybody has the right to decide when their life will end,” said Goldberg, whose latest book on cancer patients is due out this fall.

Sandeen added that the option should be available to people who are in severe emotional pain as well as physical pain.

She noted that allowing someone to continue living under those circumstances isn’t always a kind thing to do.

“Letting nature run its course in some cases is cruel,” she said.

Sandeen added that modern medicine has made great strides in prolonging people’s lives. Now it must provide a solution when a long life is not the best option.

“Medicine needs a remedy for something it has created,” she said.

For Vervoort, the remedy offered by Belgium’s right to die law is a welcome relief.

She suffers from a degenerative spinal condition and was given approval for assisted suicide in the country in 2008.

She hasn’t used that permission yet.

However, the athlete said at her Sunday news conference the approval does give her peace of mind, knowing she can end her life if her situation becomes too unbearable.

Vervoort told reporters she probably would have killed herself by now if she didn’t have the legal option in her back pocket.

“I think there will be fewer suicides when every country has the law of euthanasia. I hope everybody sees that this is not murder, but it makes people live longer,” she said.

“When the day comes — when I have more bad days than good days — I have my euthanasia papers,” she said. “But the time is not there yet.”

Trump Complains That Bombing Suspect Will Get Medical Care, Due Process

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday complained that under U.S. law, bombing suspect Ahmad Rahami would be treated in a hospital for his injuries, and represented by a lawyer if, and when, he is tried for his alleged role in a string of bombings in New York and New Jersey.

“Now we will give him amazing hospitalization. He will be taken care of by some of the best doctors in the world,” Trump told the crowd at a rally in Fort Myers, Florida.

Rahami “will be given a fully modern and updated hospital room, and he’ll probably even have room service, knowing the way our country is,” Trump said. “On top of that, he will be represented by an outstanding lawyer.”

Trump’s objection to granting Rahami, a U.S. citizen, his constitutional right to due process, which is guaranteed under the Fifth Amendment, is in keeping with other comments Trump has made about national security and individual rights.

Still, it was chilling to hear him scoff at a fundamental American value. He seemed to be saying that criminal suspects should not receive emergency medical care and legal representation.

Rahami, 28, was taken into custody Monday morning in New Jersey after police identified his fingerprint on an unexploded bomb. After a shootout with police, Rahami was injured and taken to a hospital, where he remains under arrest. The FBI has said that so far there is no evidence that Rahami was part of a “terror cell,” or that he was acting on behalf of a foreign terrorist group such as the so-called Islamic State.

Trump also complained that Rahami’s punishment might be too lenient, because public anger would likely have subsided by the time Rahami would be sentenced, if he were to be found guilty of the bombings.

“His case will go through the various court systems for years. And in the end, people will forget, and his punishment won’t be what it once would have been,” Trump said. “What a sad situation.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Monday appeared to back up Trump, calling on the Obama administration to suspend many of Rahami’s constitutional rights by designating him an “enemy combatant.” The label that would allow prosecutors and investigators to forego reading Rahami his Miranda rights or appointing a lawyer to defend him.

In 2013, Graham and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) called for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to be tried as an enemy combatant following the Boston Marathon bombing. Tsarnaev carried out the terror attack with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police before he could be captured. The Obama administration refused Graham’s request, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s case is moving through a civilian court.

How to Waste Your Entire Life: A Quick Guide To Pleasure

The easiest way to waste decades of your life is to mistake pleasure for fulfillment.

Pleasure lives in the realm of now. It’s made of feeling and emotion, which are both very important, but predictably unstable. It’s impossible to base a meaningful life solely on the pursuit of pleasure.

At the extreme end of pleasure: over-eating, over-sleeping, chronic masturbation and sex addiction, television, benders, cocaine and ice cream (the verdict is still out here). Push the button, get the stimulus. Constant stimulation to dull the pain, anxiety and existential uncertainty of being a human in society.

It feels good to feel good. So why not try to feel good all the time? Pass the mint chocolate chip, please.

Fulfillment is concerned with your highest vision for the future. It doesn’t equate pain or discomfort today with pain or discomfort tomorrow. It assumes that the best is always yet to come. Those looking for fulfillment out of life will do things that aren’t fun now, to reap massive rewards later.

In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Indian spiritual guru Paramahansa Yogananda recalls a conversation between a sage and his student:

The student exclaimed, “Master, you are wonderful….You have renounced riches and comforts to seek God and teach us wisdom.”

To which the wise sage replied:

“You are reversing the case! I have left a few paltry rupees, a few petty pleasures, for a cosmic empire of endless bliss. How then have I denied myself anything? I know the joy of sharing the treasure. Is that a sacrifice? The shortsighted worldly folk are verily the real renunciates! They relinquish an unparalleled divine possession for a poor handful of earthly toys!”

This irony captures the essence of seeking pleasure over fulfillment.

The other way toward fulfillment: Training for a triathlon, starting a business, writing a book, recording an album. All of these things can bring pleasure in the short term. But more often than not, they do not. They are not fun. They are a constant struggle. They take years to master. They are never urgent and the easiest things to postpone.

(Especially if a new season of Walking Dead is on.)

But these are also the types of activities that, done day after day, lead to the highest quality of life and most pleasure long term. Not the acute, “OMG this is so fun” type of pleasure — but the more subtle, albeit equally exhilarating feeling of overarching satisfaction with one’s life.

These types of activities make you feel like you’re worth a damn. And that’s important. Because you are.

Pleasure versus fulfillment is the difference between spending your time and investing it. Or the difference between consuming and creating.

The time will pass anyway — but at the end of a lifetime, what will you have to show for it?
Some of us will have 100,000 hours of television, a leased Mercedes and a bunch of clothes we got sick of last year as evidence that we were here.

Others will have created a legacy that leaves the world a better place and makes a difference for people we’ve never even met.

Which one will you be?

3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

#1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

#2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

#3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Reince Priebus Falsely Claims Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Was ‘Definitely Involved’ In Birtherism

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus accused Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign of pushing the so-called birtherism conspiracy theory, which Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has championed since 2011, when he demanded to see the president’s birth certificate.

“People get convicted every single day with circumstantial evidence that is enough to tip the scale,” Priebus told CBS host John Dickerson in an interview that aired Sunday. “And by the preponderance of evidence before us, Hillary Clinton or her campaign were definitely involved in this issue. We can’t keep saying it’s not true. That’s ridiculous.”

“It’s not fiction, it’s the truth,” he added.

Trump this week accused Clinton of starting the movement, but there is no evidence that anyone associated with her campaign ever pushed the theory.

McClatchy reported Friday that two of Clinton’s supporters reportedly shared the claim that Obama was not born in the U.S. in 2008. One, an Iowa volunteer, was fired. Clinton’s campaign manager apologized for their actions this week. The other was Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal, who was informally advising her during her first White House bid. However, there is no evidence that the candidate herself or her campaign spread the story.

Priebus also denied that Trump’s birther claims in 2011 were part of a strategy to rile up the GOP base.

“It was a issue that he was interested in” Priebus said. “The preponderance of evidence shows Hillary Clinton started it, and after getting this issue resolved, he proclaimed on Friday that he believed the president was born in America.”

Trump’s surrogates on Sunday struggled to defend their boss’ birtherism ― which has stretched on for five long years. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) falsely claimed that the New York businessman had not been espousing the debunked theory for years. Vice presidential nominee and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) similarly took flak for claiming the issue had been put to bed this week, dodging questions over whether Trump should apologize.

Stephen Burlingham Going Beyond Art for Youth with Cancer

Cancer. The word that terrifies us, at any age. But when a young person is struck by it, it seems all the more tragic. To help cope with this harsh reality, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who joined together to form WHO Cares and created The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). This is a place that allows teenagers to feel like teenagers and immerse in an atmosphere far unlike a hospital’s (program).

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Teen and Young Adult (TYA@MSK) Program offers special services to MSK’s teen and young adult population.

The Lounge is a space designed especially for this unique age group that was made possible by a $ 1 million donation from Teen Cancer America. The nonprofit organization, co-founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, partners with hospitals throughout the U.S. to develop specialized facilities for teens and young adults with cancer.

Inspired to go beyond art to create a space for healing, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center turned to a new friend of mine, the extraordinary thinker and doer Stephen Burlingham. Stephen, speaking to our foundation’s young global leaders this summer, explained his recent piece “Whisper” featured in the MSK Lounge for Teens and Young Adults:

I wanted to go beyond art. “Whisper,” for me, is hope for the patients, the family and friends of children living with cancer. My work springs directly from envisioning humanity’s cumulative knowledge and belief encapsulated within an ever-expanding membrane that emanates from the Elements themselves.

My work stands for the universal Membrane and involves my search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restrains and to see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible – that which is unable to be touched or grasped, that lacks a physical presence.

Stephen is no stranger when it comes with working with children in needs. The grand-grandson of the renowned designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stephen was commissioned for designing the award for the Save the Children’s 75th Anniversary Benefit in 2007. Three visionary leaders were honored at that benefit with Save the Children’s Global Humanitarian Awards — former President George H. W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and Melinda Gates.

Unlike any other artist I have met, Stephen is charismatic, spiritual, intelligent – and deeply philosophical. If you didn’t know he was an artist, you might think he is a humanitarian.

One of his works, a permanent stone sculpture entitled “The Crossing,” was erected in the ancient port of Bodrum, Turkey, on the Mediterranean. He told me the piece now bears witness to the eternal laws that are constant over time, language and culture – and the great civilizations which unite humanity.

Another of his work in progress, “The Gateway,” is an installation project that explores the frontier between the tangible and the intangible. “Traversing this universal Membrane is at the core of my work,’ he said, “and the search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restraints and see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible.”

Cancer can sometimes feel like that, intangible and out of one’s grasp. The artist speaks of his piece as a way to “look through and beyond.” I took this as a nod to those battling cancer. The Lounge at MSK provides an escape for teenagers who want to be able to live their lives as if they are somewhere else other than a hospital.

“I believe it is up to each patient and family member to choose to see and to take from your piece what you intended to offer them,” Stephen told us.

His work “Whisper,” I believe, is aptly named. Whisper surround hospitals. In Stephen’s whispers, we see something else – a different way to speak up. Among the whispers are the intangible possibility that things can get better, and that people may truly heal.

Meera Gandhi, an activist and CEO of The Giving Back Foundation, is a good friend of us both. Meera helped me gain some insight into Stephen’s life and work:

When I walked into Sloan Kettering and got to the lounge, the yellow art piece “Whisper” by Stephen Burlingham reminded me of the sun. I assumed Stephen was thinking of sunlight and energy to heal when he designed that.

The Lounge has great energy and is so comfortable and has the guitar from The Who hanging on the wall. Stephen shared that he had such joy creating the piece and hoped many teens would be healed of cancer and enjoy great downtime in the relaxed lounge created at MSK.

Meera received our foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2015.

Jeremy Hu, gallerist and global adviser to our foundation, agrees:

When you step into The Lounge at Sloan Kettering, the first thing you notice is the vibrancy of Stephen’s work brightening up the walls, signaling a hopeful tomorrow, one that is cancer-free. There is such peace in Burlingham’s pieces. The main element blends seamlessly with the world around it. It lifts you up.

A challenge we have as a foundation and young global leadership program is to try to relate to our readers the breadth and scope of those thought leaders and global citizens whom we meet during the course of our activities. Stephen Burlingham is perhaps the most intellectually engaging and challenging individual we have encountered. One piece on his hospital installation does not begin to unravel his myriad mysteries.

With this in mind, we have determined to create a series about his artistic achievements. Stephen’s world revolves around CoAu – the iconic markers of the paradigm shift of Humanity’s Consciousness, The Gateway, the physical portal of the new consciousness, and 0M1.org, a community forming around this new consciousness.

As we sat around our dining table, we discussed with Stephen his vision. In short, the artist sees three current parts: Joining the idea/vision, a shared curiosity in Humanity’s future and the cosmos; Collaborating in the realization of the Gateway; and Bringing together thought leaders and interested parties (people, universities, think tanks, etc.). Our young team seemed anxiously eager to absorb his ideas.

A creative life force such as Stephen Burlingham is difficult to encapsulate and even harder to pigeonhole. Young patients living with cancer who find themselves in The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center don’t care – they simply find enormous comfort in his piece “Whisper.”

Our foundation is actively discussing how best we might engage him in the future. Should he be Artist-in-Residence, Humanitarian of the Year, or simply honorary chair of our Global Advisory Board? Whatever role he may one day assume with us, it is clear that Stephen Burlingham is going to change the world.

A la perfeccin! Para dominar la mecnica de la escritura (Spanish Edition)

A la perfeccin! Para dominar la mecnica de la escritura (Spanish Edition)

Based on research on the acquisition of writing proficiency in a second language A la perfeccin! concentrates on helping students improve and master the mechanics of writing. In A la perfeccin!, nothing is taken for granted. Students gradually progress from the articulation of sentences to the construction of paragraphs, to the elaboration of coherent essays, papers, critiques, and other academic writing. Often, writing papers in an advanced literature class is a source of frustration for both student and instructor. Students find that they lack the tools to use the language to express ideas in a clear and concise manner. Instructors are forced to spend time correcting the paper for legibility rather than being able to suggest improvements in style and structure. With sections devoted to reviewing grammar, consolidating knowledge to allow for speed, and developing style, A la perfeccin! provides the necessary tools for a student to improve their overall writing. A la perfeccin! can be used in any advanced Spanish Composition and/or Grammar and Stylistics course or in any course designed to improve students’ writing. The exercises in the book and in the workbook additionally take into consideration the vocabulary and content students need to review to succeed in the Praxis Teachers Certification Exam. Bill Maher Goes Toe-To-Toe With Trump’s Campaign Manager

So … how do you really feel, Bill?

The “Real Time” host happens to be longtime friends with Kellyanne Conway, now Donald Trump’s campaign manager, but he didn’t let that friendship sugarcoat his questions for her on Friday’s show.

Maher welcomed Conway by telling her she is “enabling pure evil,” and spent part of the segment calling out false things Trump has said. The comedian joked, “I don’t have time to go through all of his lies, we only have an hour.”

But Conway, a “Real Time” veteran, had plenty of counterarguments ready. She accused Maher of cherrypicking examples, and, after pointing out that Hillary Clinton is falling in the polls, said, “I actually think we’re going to win, Bill. You know it. You feel it. I think you’re getting nervous.”

“Oh, I am getting nervous,” Maher quipped, “but it’s not because Trump is good. It’s because people are stupid.”

“Real Time with Bill Maher” airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.

    The 6 Secrets of Self-Control

    2016-09-09-1473458162-6578277-TheSixSecretsofSelfControlHP.jpg

What is it about self-control that makes it so difficult to rely on? Self-control is a skill we all possess (honest); yet we tend to give ourselves little credit for it. Self-control is so fleeting for most that when Martin Seligman and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed two million people and asked them to rank order their strengths in 24 different skills, self-control ended up in the very bottom slot.

Watch Tommy Boy Explain His Struggles With Self-Control

When it comes to self-control, it is so easy to focus on our failures that our successes tend to pale in comparison. And why shouldn’t they? Self-control is an effort that’s intended to help achieve a goal. Failing to control yourself is just that–a failure. If you’re trying to avoid digging into that bag of chips after dinner because you want to lose a few pounds and you succeed Monday and Tuesday nights only to succumb to temptation on Wednesday by eating four servings’ worth of the empty calories, your failure outweighs your success. You’ve taken two steps forward and four steps back.

With this success/failure dichotomy in mind, I give you six strategies for self-control. Some are obvious, others counter-intuitive, but all will help you eliminate those pesky failures and ensure your efforts to boost your willpower are successful enough to keep you headed in the right direction for achieving your goals.

    Self-Control Secret #1 – Meditate

Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine. Even simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses. Buddhist monks appear calm and in control for a reason.

    Self-Control Secret #2 – Eat

File this one in the counter-intuitive category, especially if you’re having trouble controlling your eating. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance.

    Self-Control Secret #3 – Exercise

Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back.

    Self-Control Secret #4 – Sleep

When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in Secret #2, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep–every night–is one of the best moves you can make.

    Self-Control Secret #5 – Ride the Wave

Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over.

    Self-Control Secret #6 – Forgive Yourself

A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.

    Putting These Strategies to Work

The important thing to remember is you have to give these strategies the opportunity to work. This means recognizing the moments where you are struggling with self-control and, rather than giving in to impulse, taking a look at the Six Secrets and giving them a go before you give in.

    Foot Drop

    What is foot drop?
Foot drop is the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot (Figure 1). A common symptom of foot drop is a high steppage gait, often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking. When a person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.

    2016-09-15-1473960001-2882617-foot1.PNG

Foot drop usually results from an injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course. The peroneal nerve begins from the L4, L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve (Figure 2). The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.

    2016-09-15-1473964839-1700154-foot2.PNG

In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg (Figure 3). The common peroneal nerve then travels anterior around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg, which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle (Figure 4).

    2016-09-15-1473964901-5244603-Foot4.PNG

Conditions Causing Foot Drop (Figure 5):
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop. Another cause of foot drop can be a lumbosacral plexus injury, pelvic fracture. Foot drop may also be caused by a sciatic nerve injury, like a hip dislocation. The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip. An injury to the knee, such as a knee dislocation may also cause foot drop. In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury. In established compartment syndrome, foot drop is a late finding. Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occurs in patients if fasciotomy is not performed. Fasciotomy should be done early. Four hours of ischemia may be tolerated but by eight hours, the damage is often irreversible.

    2016-09-15-1473964936-7620194-foot5.PNG

Treatment of Peroneal Nerve Injury/Foot Drop:
If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed. EMG and nerve studies should be done for the patient. Recovery may take one year to 18 months. The big toe will be the last to recover. If recovery is not achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.

Friday Talking Points — Media Gets Played By Trump, Again

The media got played by Donald Trump this morning, once again. Picture Charlie Brown lying flat on his back, wondering why he keeps falling for the old kick-the-football bit. That was cable television, after they had carried — live — a full hour of an empty podium (Trump didn’t start on time), then a full-on advertisement for Trump’s new D.C. hotel, then some surrogates saying how wonderful Trump was. At the very end, Trump uttered the 30 seconds of soundbite the cable channels had been waiting for, and then even though it was billed as a press conference, Trump walked off and refused to answer any questions.

Here’s a hint, for the clueless cable networks: if you don’t want to feel cheap and dirty afterwards, then don’t get in bed with Trump again. If you don’t want to hear: “Oh, and there’s some money on the dresser, why don’t you buy something nice for yourself…” then don’t put yourself into that situation in the first place.

Of course, the networks were outraged. They’ll be outraged right up until Trump pulls the exact same trick on them in a few days. Rinse and repeat. Trump did almost exactly the same thing with his Dr. Oz appearance, a few days earlier. First, he was going to release his medical report. Then he wasn’t. Then, he let Dr. Oz have a peek at a one-page summary. The media ate it up with a spoon, breathlessly reporting on each twist and turn. No wonder the Trump campaign isn’t buying many ads — they really don’t have to when they can play the media like a fiddle, week after week.

Perhaps there’s a silver lining to this story. Perhaps this will finally be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. After Matt Lauer’s disastrous performance with Trump and Clinton, the media has gotten noticeably tougher on challenging Trump’s blithe claims and shifting positions. Harder questions are being asked, and non-answers (and outright lies) are being challenged. Nobody wants the scorn that was heaped on Lauer. Well, except for Jimmy Fallon, but he’s a comedian and doesn’t call himself a journalist. The ones that do consider themselves journalists all seem to be coming out of their daze in the past week or so, and waking up to their responsibilities to separate fact from fiction on the campaign trail. So perhaps Trump blatantly playing them this morning will stiffen their spines even further. Hey, anything’s possible, right?

In other news from the campaign trail, Trump once again failed badly in a photo-op event reaching out to African-Americans. No surprise there, really. After being chastised by the pastor who invited Trump to Flint to speak about their water crisis, Trump was on television the next day picking a fight with her. Chalk up another fail on the Trump minority outreach tote board, folks!

In similar news, Donald Trump Jr. insulted Jewish voters by making an offhanded Holocaust joke. Junior also admitted that Dad isn’t going to release his tax returns at all, because then people might say mean things about his finances. A chip off the old block!

Let’s see, what else? Yet another newspaper that routinely (for the past century, in fact) endorses Republican candidates could not bring themselves to endorse Trump. So far, there have been precisely zero major newspapers to back Trump. More papers have endorsed Gary Johnson than have endorsed Trump, in fact. Embarrassing!

Hillary Clinton had a pretty dismal week as well, beginning by not admitting she had been diagnosed with pneumonia last Friday. She then pigeonholed half of Donald Trump supporters into a “basket of deplorables,” and refused to back down (except for the part about “half”). While attending a 9/11 memorial service, Clinton was overcome by the heat and stumbled badly getting into a van. It took her campaign hours to admit she actually was sick, which certainly didn’t do her any good on the transparency front. Also, all week long her poll numbers have been falling.

It isn’t exactly time for Democrats to panic, but Clinton surely does need to turn things around soon. Her best chance will be at the first of the three televised presidential debates, for which she’s been preparing for weeks now. Now, if (hypothetically speaking) Clinton physically collapses on stage during the debate, that would be the time for Democrats to panic, because that might guarantee President Trump. But if Clinton confidently shreds Trump in the first debate, her campaign can get back onto the right track in an instant. To put it another way, there’s a lot riding on this debate, and it will doubtlessly be the most-watched presidential debate of all time.

And finally, we got a whole bunch of excellent economic news this week, not that most of the media was paying much attention. I wrote about this good news in more detail on Wednesday:

To review: wages grew more than ever previously recorded. Poverty fell at the steepest rate since L.B.J. was in the White House. According to Gallup, the rate of uninsured Americans was at 18.0 percent in 2013, and it is now down to 9.1 percent. That means the percent of people without health insurance is now half what it was, just before Obamacare started. Half! Obamacare has done precisely what it was designed to do, to put this another way. The job market continues to improve, as it has steadily throughout most of Obama’s term in office (after the bottom was hit during his first year). The wage gap between men and women even slightly improved. Oh, and raising minimum wages means everyone’s wages increase, and this starts from the lowest income levels and moves up — instead of the top-down wage increases that really only benefit the one percent.

All of these facts should be highlighted by Hillary Clinton during the debate, because they all paint exactly the opposite picture as what Trump’s been saying during his entire campaign. Things are getting better out there, mostly because of Obamacare and hiking the minimum wage — two prime issues for a Democrat to campaign on.

Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week

President Obama earned at least an Honorable Mention this week, for appearing solo on the campaign trail for Hillary Clinton. He was back to his old campaigning form, but the real reason it’s worth a mention here is because an event like this hasn’t happened in almost thirty years. An incumbent president is normally expected to campaign for his party’s nominee, but it hasn’t actually happened since Ronald Reagan did so for George H. W. Bush in 1988. Both times it could have happened since then, it didn’t. The first was in 2000, when Al Gore didn’t want Bill Clinton to campaign for him, because the Monica Lewinsky impeachment scandal was still so fresh. Many pundits later wondered whether Clinton making appearances (say, in urban environments) for Gore could have pushed him over the top. The second time this might have happened, neither John McCain nor any other Republican candidate wanted anything to do with George W. Bush, whose approval ratings had sunk into the 20s. Bush was roughly as popular as Richard Nixon was, just before he resigned, so he didn’t get any invitations to campaign (to say the least). So Obama’s appearance this week really should have been a normal thing for a second-term president to do, but this hasn’t actually happened for a very long time.

But our Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week award instead goes to five senators, led by Jeff Merkley of Oregon, who are attempting to bring back the public option for health insurance. Merkley was joined by Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, and Patty Murray, and soon dozens of other Senate Democrats were flocking to co-sponsor the measure.

They realize they have an uphill climb in front of them. They are really hoping to build support so they can pass a bill in the next Congress, with a new president. These things take time, in other words, but that shouldn’t detract from beginning the effort now. The public option is supported by Hillary Clinton and by millions of Americans, so raising the issue now means it will be talked about during the campaign.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has already succeeded in reducing the uninsured rate of the American public by half — from 18 percent down to 9 percent. Introducing a public option will only make the marketplaces better and more competitive. Now that the two biggest Democratic foes of the public option (Max Baucus and Joe Lieberman) are both gone from the Senate, it is time for the debate to begin anew.

For reintroducing the measure, we have five Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week awards this week, for Senators Jeff Merkley, Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, and Patty Murray. If Democrats manage to take back the Senate, we can expect a full-throated debate early next year on the issue. For getting this particular ball rolling, these senators deserve recognition and support, so handing them MIDOTW awards is the least we can do.

[Rather than congratulating the five winners directly, instead we’d encourage you to take a minute to sign the petition supporting a public option for health insurance.]

Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week

The obvious choice for Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week this week is none other than Hillary Clinton. While she was resting up, perhaps a fitting punishment would have been to write 100 times on a chalkboard (Bart Simpson-style): “It’s not the crime but the coverup that gets you.”

    Sigh.

There was no real “crime” here, of course. Not telling the public and the media that you are sick is not even remotely against the law, even for presidential candidates. And, once again, you can fully sympathize with Clinton’s motivation for keeping a lid on her personal information — there was already a lot of wild and unfounded speculation running around the darker corners of the right-wing echo chamber that she had some deathly disease. Admitting that she had been diagnosed with pneumonia would, obviously, just feed into that whole rumor mill.

Still, the penchant for secrecy when none is really necessary is a definite pattern of behavior for Clinton, and one she would do well to change in the future. Imagine the following scenario, instead of what happened: Clinton publicly announces she’s got pneumonia on the same day she is diagnosed (last Friday), and shows the media a letter from her doctor explaining what she’s got and how she’s treating it. Then she boldly announces that while she will be taking a little time off from normal campaign events, she will make the effort to go to the 9/11 memorial service, since she was so intimately involved in the aftermath (being one of New York’s senators, at the time). She attends the event and then has to leave early for medical reasons. She staggers getting into her vehicle, and is caught on video.

That would be a much more sympathetic scenario than what took place, wouldn’t it? Rising from her sickbed to honor the fallen, but being overcome and having to be helped away. That’s a sympathetic portrait of a dedicated politician. Instead, what we got was a whole lot of unnecessary secrecy and a very bad photo op.

Instead of the story being defused before it happened, it becomes a story about Clinton not being fully transparent and choosing secrecy when it really wasn’t even warranted. That feeds into a negative image of her that plenty of voters already hold.

So for not being upfront with the state of her health while running for president, Hillary Clinton is indeed our Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week. Repeat after me: It’s not the crime, it’s the coverup that gets you. It’s not the crime, it’s the coverup that gets you. It’s not the crime, it’s the coverup….

[Hillary Clinton is currently running for office, and it is our standing policy not to provide contact information to campaign websites, sorry.]

    Friday Talking Points

    Volume 409 (9/16/16)

Lost in all the circus acts the media has been blindly chasing, the Washington Post has quietly been doing a bang-up job digging into the namesake charity of Donald Trump. They’ve spent months and months combing through public records and phoning up hundreds of charities to discover the truths behind the Donald J. Trump Foundation scam. What they’ve found so far is pretty astounding, even if the entire rest of the media world has largely ignored it while chasing Trump’s shiny distractions and eruptions.

The Post — in the past week alone — has published story after story after story after story after story on the Trump Foundation’s shenanigans, and we can only hope some bright researcher puts these stories on Lester Holt’s desk so he can brush up on the facts before the first presidential debate.

We have to thank the Washington Post for committing these acts of real journalism in the midst of the presidential campaign. Nobody else has bothered to track this stuff down, and now the only thing left to do is to ask Trump to his face about what has been uncovered. This would require television “journalists” to do their homework and boldly confront Trump, though, so we’re not exactly holding our breath in anticipation of it happening.

Still, it gives us plenty of fodder for this week’s talking points. Our theme today comes from Hillary Clinton. We had to scratch our heads a bit about the whole “baskets” thing, but we did appreciate her calling out the Trump campaign’s deplorable appeal. So each of these is presented as a response that can be used any time the word “deplorable” pops up in a political conversation.

    1
       Where’s the $ 10,000,000, Donald?

Saying stuff is easy. Writing checks, not so easy, apparently.

“You know what’s deplorable? Telling the public you’ve given ‘tens of millions of dollars’ to charity when you haven’t even given your own namesake charity one thin dime in years. Or refusing to prove that you’ve given any money to charity at all. We’ve already seen Trump do this earlier in the campaign, when reporters began asking about the money Trump promised to donate to veterans — and none of it had actually been donated. Donald Trump loves saying he’ll donate to charity, but he rarely follows through with the actual money. And that’s pretty deplorable.”

    2
       Political slush fund

This is the only one that is actually getting some attention from the rest of the media. But it needs to be hammered as many times as possible.

“You know what’s deplorable? Using your own charity as a slush fund to make campaign donations to bribe an attorney general into not investigating your fraudulent university scam. That’s truly deplorable.”

    3
       Lying about donations

This one is just straight-up lying. Lying about donations given to charity. So far, I don’t think Trump has ever been asked about it by anyone.

“You know what else is deplorable? Telling the I.R.S. you’ve given money to charities when you didn’t. The Washington Post has been digging through the Trump charity’s financial statements, and has found multiple examples of false donation claims. Trump’s paperwork says he gave a certain amount to a certain charity, but when the Post calls them up and asks them to verify, the charities say they’ve never received a penny from either Trump’s foundation or Trump himself. That’s not only deplorable, it also could be tax fraud.”

    4
       It’s yuuuuge!

This one has been picked up, not by journalists, but by late-night comedians. Hey, it’s a start, we suppose.

“You know what’s really deplorable? Paying $ 20,000 to a charity to buy a six-foot painting of yourself, that you then hang in the boardroom of one of your golf courses. That even reaches beyond deplorable into downright narcissism, folks.”

    5
       Birtherism non-apology

Trump tried to weasel his way out of leading the birther movement today. Without apologizing, and bizarrely blaming Clinton for it all.

“You know what’s deplorable? Spending years championing a conspiracy theory that America’s first black president wasn’t born in the United States, based on absolutely nothing. Then refusing for an entire year to dispute your birtherism on the campaign trail. And when you are finally forced to admit you were wrong, refusing to apologize for it and blaming someone else for your deplorable behavior.”

    6
       The KKK is deplorable, Mike

Trump’s running mate refuses to say mean things about a former wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. There’s a word for that, Mike.

“You know who is deplorable? David Duke, former Klan leader, is deplorable. It’s not even all that close a call, really, which is why it is astounding that Mike Pence couldn’t bring himself to say it. Not only is David Duke deplorable, but not clearly saying so is also pretty deplorable.”

    7
       Gas chamber jokes are…

Donald Trump Junior made a jaw-dropping reference to “gas chambers” the other day. Now he says he didn’t mean what everyone thinks he meant by it. Because, apparently, nobody in the Trump family ever apologizes for anything.

“You know what’s deplorable? Making jokes about the Holocaust. That is unbelievably deplorable. And despicable, just for good measure.”

WATCH: “People Shouldn’t…” (and needing to be upset when they do…)

Most of us have a lot of rules about what people shouldn’t do… and how we must feel if they do. But that puts our well-being in the hands of other people. Hopefully this video will help you cultivate a more empowering and peaceful mindset.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

American Men Are Pretty Happy With Their Penises

    2016-09-16-1474064741-45703-14austinpowers.w710.h473.2x.jpg

For understandable reasons, society’s conversation about body satisfaction tends to focus on women. Women, it can safely be argued, face a lot more social pressure to look good all the time, to feel ashamed of their bodies, and to harp on minor imperfections.

Men aren’t immune from all that, though. And one particularly painful area where it manifests, according to sexual health researchers, is in insecurity about their penises. This can lead to some bad outcomes. As a team led by Thomas Gaither, a urologist at the University of California, San Francisco, point out in a new study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, “Case reports have shown men undergo risky procedures, such as silicon injections, to lengthen their penis and increase penile girth.” In addition, “Genital piercings, silicone injection, and subcutaneous implant are increasingly common and are associated with numerous complications.”

Related: Here Are Your Penis Beauty Standards

Gaither and his colleagues wanted to better understand how men view their penises, so they conducted what they say is the first nationally representative survey using a newly developed scale called the Index of Male Genital Image, or IMGI. It consists of 14 statements ranked on a score of 1-7 involving penis length, girth, and so on — a score of 1-3 is coded as “dissatisfied,” while 4-7 is coded as satisfied. They got results from 3,996 men, the sample drawn from 18-to-65-year-olds who weren’t institutionalized.

Comparing those who landed in the “satisfied” (greater than 4.0) versus “unsatisfied” (4.0 or lower) buckets when the scores were averaged, the researchers didn’t find any statistically significant differences in penile satisfaction when it came to age, “race, marital status, education, location, income, or sexual partners.” Penile (dis)satisfaction appears to be pretty much constant across these categories.

    Overall:

A total of 3433 (85.9%) reported an average greater than 4 per item on the IMGI and thus were classified as satisfied. Men reported highest satisfaction with the shape of their glans (64%), followed by circumcision status (62%), girth of erect penis (61%), texture of skin (60%), and size of testicles (59%). Men reported dissatisfaction with the size of their flaccid penis (27 %), length of erect penis (19%), girth of erect penis (15%), amount of pubic hair (14%), and amount of semen (12%). Men reported neutrality with the scent of their genitals (44%), genital veins (43%), location of urethra (42%), color of genitals (40%), and amount of pubic hair (36%). Of note, those who were extremely dissatisfied (score of 1 or 2) reported dissatisfaction with their flaccid penis (10.0%), length of erect penis (5.7 %), and girth of erect penis (4.5%).

There were some decent-size differences in terms of the sexual experiences of men who were satisfied versus dissatisfied with their penises. Those who were satisfied were less likely to be sexually active (73.5 percent versus 86.3 percent), and engaged in less daily and weekly sexual activity. There were also slight but statistically significant differences in the percentage of dissatisfied versus satisfied men who reported having had vaginal or receptive oral sex (85.2 percent versus 89.5 percent, and 61 percent versus 66.2 percent). The obvious question here is what’s causing what: To what extent are men who are dissatisfied with their penises less likely to seek out sex as a result of their insecurity? A correlational self-report study can’t answer that, nor can it answer whether these mens’ likes and dislikes were shared by their sexual partners.

Related: Why Is No One Interested in Vagina Size?

It’s interesting that a sizable minority of men reported dissatisfaction with their testicle size or glans shape. On the one hand, in a survey like this you are explicitly asking about certain features, so these responses don’t mean that they are wandering around obsessing over this stuff. (It would be another thing entirely if you asked men to generate an open-ended list of body features they didn’t like and these kept popping up.) But on the other: It’s an interesting comparison to what women go through, because it highlights the fact that at least some of the things both men and women worry about probably aren’t, in fact, of much import to anyone else. If you’re a guy, the odds that a partner is going to care that much about the size of your testicles or the “shape of your glans” — that’s something I can honestly say I had never even thought about before reading this article, and which the researchers note “has little anatomic variability” — are probably pretty low.

More broadly, the main takeaway, as a first-pass attempt at understanding this stuff, is that men mostly feel pretty happy with their penises. Which can maybe explain the epidemic of unsolicited photos.

The Era of American Global Dominance Is Over

You might recall the term “Eurasia” from high school geography classes. The term isn’t used much anymore in political discussions in the West, but it should be. That is where the most serious geopolitical action is going to be taking place in the world as we move deeper into the 21st century. The U.S., focused so intently on “containment” of Russia, the so-called Islamic State and China, will be missing the bigger Eurasian strategic picture.

Eurasia is the greatest landmass of the world, embracing Europe and all of Asia — some of the oldest and greatest centers of human civilization.

So what is Eurasianism? It has meant different things at different periods. A century ago, the Kissingers of the time spun theories about a deep and inevitable strategic clash between seaborne power (U.K./U.S.) and continental/land-based powers (Germany, Russia.) “Eurasia” then meant mostly Europe and western Russia. Indeed, what need was there to talk then about Asia itself? Most of Asia was underdeveloped and lay under the control of the British Empire (India, China) or the French (Indochina) and had no independent will. Japan was the only real “Asian power” — that ironically developed its own imperial designs, mimicking the West, and thus came to clash with American imperial power in the Pacific.

The more Washington attempts to contain or throttle Eurasianism as a genuine rising force, the greater will be the determination of states to become part of this rising Eurasian world.

Today, of course, all that is different. Eurasia increasingly means “Asia” in which the “Euro” part figures modestly. Furthermore, China has now become the center of Eurasia as the world’s second-largest economy. Not surprisingly, China — like the Muslim world — projects a decidedly “anti-imperial” bent based on what it sees as its humiliation at the hands of the West (and Japan) during its 200-year eclipse — during one of its dynastic down cycles. But China is very much back now into a classic “up-cycle” mode of power and influence again and is determined to project its weight and influence. India, too, now is now a rapidly developing power with regional reach. And Japan, while quiescent, still represents formidable economic power, perhaps to be augmented by greater military regional reach.

The significance of the term “Eurasian” has changed a good deal, but it still suggests strategic rivalry. At a time when the U.S. formally declares its intent to militarily dominate the world (“full spectrum dominance” was the official Pentagon doctrine in 2000) the concept of Eurasianism is responding with vigor. And not just in China, but in its new significance for countries like Russia, Iran and even Turkey. It suggests a sense of the eclipse of dominant western power in the face of new Asian power.

It’s not all just about military and money. It’s also cultural. Russian culture has for two centuries maintained a lively debate about whether Russia belongs to the West, or embodies a distinctly Eurasian (yevraziiskaya) culture that is separate from the West. Eurasianists represent a significant force within Russian strategic and military thinking (although Putin, interestingly, does not fully embrace this worldview.)

The idea is a vague but culturally important one; it grapples with Russian identity. It speaks of a Slavic culture but with deep Eurasian roots even in an old Turkic and Tatar past. Remember that historically it is the modern West that torched Russia twice: witness the invasions of Napoleon and Hitler up to the gates of Moscow. NATO today probes ever more deeply all around the Russian periphery. The Eurasianists are suspicious of, if not hostile to, the West as a permanent threat to “Holy Mother Russia.” “Eurasianism” will always lurk just beneath the surface in the Russian strategic worldview.

That is what Russia’s new Eurasian Economic Union is all about, a goal to at least economically unite Belarus, the Central Asian states and others into a greater Eurasian economic whole. (Oil-rich Kazakhstan was actually the author of the concept; it will seek to maintain ties with the West, but look at it its place on a world map to see where Kazakhstan’s real long-term options lie. Russia may not now be the best economic star to tie one’s future to, but it is just one of many Eurasian vehicles out there and they are not mutually exclusive. Options bring greater security.

China is moving in stunningly ambitious directions in creating the new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (that 57 states have signed onto including most European states, Canada and Australia — but conspicuously without Japan so far, or the U.S.) This creates a new Eurasian-focused central banking instrument with strong Chinese influence. China is also projecting massive new transportation networks (the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road — “One Belt, One Road“) across Eurasia to China linking China to Europe, the Middle East, Central and South Asia and the Far East by rail, road and sea. China’s “Eurasian strategy” is already a burgeoning reality. Yes, suspicions and rivalries exist between Russia and China and India and Japan. But the strong economic and developmental thrust of these proposals differ markedly from the American more “security” focused organization with its worrisome military implications.

China is moving in stunningly ambitious directions in creating the new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

Not only has Washington fought these Chinese and Eurasian initiatives unsuccessfully, but it is U.S. policies in particular — that identify both Russia and China as the presumptive enemy — that have helped bring Russia and China together on many issues, linked now by shared distrust of U.S. global military ambitions.

Japan, incidentally, before World War II had its own doctrine of “Eurasianism” — an effort to identify with and stir up Asian peoples and territories against western colonial domination. This strategy could have been quite effective had it not been accompanied by Japan’s own brutal military invasions of East Asian countries, destroying the credibility of the Japanese “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere .” Today Japan hasn’t moved its location; it will still have to deal with the reality of Chinese power in the East. And what Japanese leader would seriously pursue a long range policy of hostility to China in support of a U.S. Pacific strategy that is inherently designed to bottle up China? Especially when China and Japan are huge mutual trading and investment partners?

Iran is keenly interested in balancing against geopolitical pressures from the U.S. and seeks membership in these Russian and Chinese economic development institutions. Iran is a natural “Eurasian ” and “Silk Road” power.

    eurasian economic union summit

Turkey has gotten into the Eurasian game, again. Going back to the early days of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party foreign policy — in the vision of then-foreign minister Davutoğlu — Turkey was no longer limited to being a western power, but also proclaimed its geopolitical interests (nearly a hundred years after the fall of the Ottoman Empire) in the Middle East, and indeed, Eurasia. (After all, the Turks originally come from Eurasia, having migrated west from Lake Baikal a thousand years ago.) That means serious ties with Russia, combined with deep ethnic, cultural and historical ties with Central Asia, and with China. Turkey (like Iran and Pakistan) seeks to be part of these Russian and Chinese networks. And, among some Turkish nationalist politicians and military officers (including many secular Kemalists) there is strong “Eurasianist” leaning to expand Turkey’s geopolitical options to explore strategic and cultural ties with Eurasia. It also reflects an expression of distrust of western and U.S. efforts to dominate the region.

For Turkey this is not an either/or issue. It can seek to be part of Europe — including NATO — but will not relinquish the broad geostrategic alternative options to the East, with its ever greater economic clout, and roads and rails to link it.

In short, the new Eurasianism is no longer about 19th century land and sea power. It is an acknowledgment that the era of western — and especially U.S. — global dominance is over. Washington can no longer command — or afford — a longer-term bid to dominate Eurasia. In economic terms, no state in the region, including Turkey, would be foolish enough to turn its back on this rising “Eurasian” potential that also offers strategic balance and economic options.

The new Eurasianism is no longer about 19th century land and sea power. It is an acknowledgment that the era of western — and especially U.S. — global dominance is over.

There are, of course, huge fault lines across Eurasia — ethnic, economic, strategic and some degree of rivalry. But the more Washington attempts to contain or throttle Eurasianism as a genuine rising force, the greater will be the determination of states to become part of this rising Eurasian world, even while not rejecting the West.

All countries like to have alternatives. They don’t like to lie beholden to a single global power that tries to call the shots. America’s narrative of what the global order is all about is no longer accepted globally. Furthermore, it is no longer realistic. It would seem short-sighted for Washington to continue focus upon expanding military alliances while most of the rest of the world is looking to greater prosperity and rising regional clout. (China’s military expenditures are about one-quarter of U.S. spending.)
